An Introduction to A Simple Soul by Gustave Flaubert
The 1877 novella, A Simple Soul (sometimes translated as A Simple Heart) by Gustave Flaubert, tells the story of Felicite’, a loyal servant to the widowed Mme. Aubain and her two young children. Felicite’ gives herself over completely to the well-being of the family, rarely indulging her own emotional and material needs. The core of her being is a deep, unquestioning, religious faith. The novella’s style is spare and somber, yet undeniably moving.
